Introduction to critical and contextual awareness in art and design
1)What was one of the reasons artists stopped focussing on realism?
A reason that arrists stopped focusing on painting realism is that cameras have been invented that create a far more real and prcise image therefore painters no longer were able to continue painting photo realism as their paintings were not the same compared to the camera.
1)Who was the first artist to focus on ‘capturing emotion and light in a painting rather than capture realism’?
-Select one of his images and comment on it
Turner was one of the first to really focus on capturing emotion and light in a painting rather than capture realism.
This painting by Turner is tryng to express the emotion within the painting rather than the actual picture, you dont really see the detail of the image just the simple shapes. the artist uses warm colours which express a warm and friendly emotion.
1)What movement was trying to ‘capture a feeling or experience rather than to achieve accurate depiction’.
-Choose an artist and Painting from this movement a comment on it
Impressionists are people who try to capture a feeling or expression rather than the actual image such as cameras do.
This painting by monet called sunrise expresses a very cold dull morning as the colours arnt warm it shows that the sun is just coming out therefore the colours used are creating a very chilly look.
1)What did Cezanne say that everything can be reduced to?
-Find an image of his and comment on it
Cezanne said that everything could be changed into simple gemetric objects
•“everything in nature is based on the sphere, cone, and cylinder.”

Did the camera kill art?
I don’t agree with this statement as I believe that the camera did not kill art but create art. Due to the invention of the camera artists began to lose their job as an artist that painted identical painting to what they saw with their eye this is because the camera took it ,because of this artists had to think outside the box and create something that the camera couldn’t. The artists that successfully succeeded to still continue their career with the invention of the camera proceeded to create art such as those that expressed the emotion and light in the painting such as Turner who focused on changing the original colour of the picture into colours that created an emotion and light such as using warmer colours to create a feeling of warmth. People that created this work were called impressionists. Soon after the impressionists artists began to experiment with art and artists such as Cezanne who believed that everything could be simplified into simple geometrical shape “everything in nature is based on the sphere, cone, and cylinder.” Cezanne would paint his artwork using geometrical shapes instead of painting an actual picture. This way of painting was called cubism which is still used by some artists such as Picasso.
On the other hand others may not agree with my reasons as people have different views on what art actually is therefore would conclude that the camera did kill art. These people would believe that painting an identical copy of what is actually seen would classify as art, which would conclude on why they may believe the camera did kill art as artists were no longer asked to paint what they would normally paint therefore resulting in a high decrease of income. They would also believe that is must have killed art as what was known as art then was no longer wanted as the camera could easily replace it and make it look even better and far more accurate than the artist could ever paint , another reason to show this is that people that hired artists to paint portraits of them were no longer looking for artists but buying cameras this shows that camera would have killed art as artists were no longer needed as their clients got what they needed much faster and cheaper.
In conclusion I still believe that the camera did not kill art as artists should not only paint exactly what to see but paint something that people can’t see therefore they would have to use their creativity and imagination to create something different and unusual as those skills are something artists need therefore I would conclude that the camera did not kill art but it was just a way for artists to realise that there are other ways of creating art and not just copying what your eye sees, this means that the camera forced artists to think outside the box so they could still keep their income and or rise it.
