Personal statement
To this day I remember playing 'Pink Panther Pinkadelic Pursuit' on PS1 as a child and still
remember the complicated levels I had to go through. I believe this would be the moment that I
started enjoying games and began to experiment with different types of games such as 'Spyro'
or 'Scooby doo'. Over the years the gaming industry has improved the visual quality of games
hugely and for the past few years I began to acknowledge the quality of the games produced and
thoroughly enjoy the different experiences I got from playing far more modern games.
I am applying for this course as I know I would both enjoy and succeed within this industry as
I have the passion and determination that is shown throughout my recent work that will allow
me to prosper in this extremely competitive profession.
Game design allows me to combine two of my main interests together, art and gaming due to this
I am capable of including my creativity and skill to complete sketches or 3D models with the
knowledge of the quality of game models that make me perfectly suitable for the course. Not
only do I have the creativity and imagination but I have nearly two years of experience with
softwares used in the industry such as Maya and Mudbox, throughout those years I managed to
learn all kinds of techniques such as texturing, rigging, animating and modelling. In one of
my earlier project I modelled a 3D pirate village in Maya using extrusions, bridging and other
techniques to create a detailed environment that was later textured using UV mapping and
exported into Unity which allowed me to create the environment experiment with lighting and
effects such as fog and rain , overall I thought the project was successful and expressed a
good example of the work I am capable of producing.
During my work experience with Chocolate Films I was capable of creating a short 3-minute
video that taught me different uses of lighting, angles and the perception it gives to the
viewer such as a view from below makes the person seem somewhat bigger. I also learnt
different aspects of the camera and how to use the equipment provided. This experience gave me
the opportunity to work in a real time environment and take part in achieving the Arts Award
Bronze and improve skills such as teamwork, working under pressure and time management which
is something I need to specialise in to be able to successfully complete this course and
continue within the gaming industry.
During high school I managed to contribute in different roles such as being elected as sport
leader that allowed me to organise and plan out sporting events outside of school that I had
to help run and encourage peers to try their best. I would attend meetings and meet deadlines
when handing in all the paperwork. I believe that this experience has helped me gain
confidence and organisation skills
Outside of college I love to draw and sketch, I am interested in creepy, dark art some of
which being inspired by Tim Burton and his style of work where I mostly use black ink pens and
loosely sketch my drawings, I tend to draw whenever I'm not busy with work.
Not only do I enjoy drawing creepy art but I have gained experience in drawing all kinds of
styles some of which including real life drawings ranging from well-proportioned people to
still objects which I have started learning in high school where I undertook a Fine art GCSE.
My dream job is to work with a games design company to create character textured models for
multi-platform console games and this desired university course will allow me to do so.
